This collection of short stories is a series of first-person fictional confessions, where a narrator describes all the men in her life in alphabetical order. Is the narrator one and the same throughout the whole book? That’s up to the reader to decide.
“I had a girlfriend,” he told me after the first time we kissed. “I haven’t seen her in three months, but before that we went backpacking, just the two of us. She’s a rich Jewish girl from London and she left me. And now she just wrote me to say that she wants me back.”
I didn’t feel like listening to what he was saying. At that moment, I had no idea what Miriam’s role would be in inflicting me with one of the deepest wounds of my life.
I couldn’t have imagined at that point that Fred had everything that I could wish for in a man. But besides all that, there was another man in there – the one I didn’t know yet; a man of the sea.
I didn’t know then that a man of the sea would betray our connection when he heard one sentence: “My father will buy you a yacht!”
